Great Trek of the Transport Party, Mexico 1825-26

£20.00

This book tells the story of the arrival of the machinery of the Industrial Revolution to one of Mexico’s greatest silver mining centres: Real del Monte. Drawing on original company correspondence, it describes in detail the activities of one of the most important mining companies – the Real del Monte –  as it undertook the transatlantic exportation of 1,500 tons of machinery, including eight steam engines. The story of the Great Trek of the Transport Party is told in full for the first time, and covers the trials and tribulations of the men who moved the machinery from the coast 266 miles inland to the mines, at great cost to life.  The book is essential reading for anyone interested the history of post independent Mexico, the penetration of British capital and technology to the newly independent nation and Cornwall’s role in this process. I have just received my copy, and while I have not yet dived into the text, my first impressions of this volume are that it is nothing short of spectacular.
    A Visual and Scholarly Feast.

From the moment you pick it up, the production quality of this Cornubian Press paperback is striking. Printed on premium glossy paper, the book features front and back folded flaps that open up into a beautifully executed, illustrated colour map tracking the exact route of the 1825–26 transport party.
The front matter sets an incredibly high standard, featuring a foreword by Juan Carlos Esparza (MA) of the prestigious Instituto Cultural Helénico in Mexico City, alongside a note marking the bicentennial of this legendary trek. The book is structured across an introduction, eight chapters, and an epilogue. True to Dr Schwartz’s reputation as a meticulous researcher who leaves no stone unturned, the academic grounding here is massive. She has hunted down exclusive, international source materials, backed up by two appendices, a comprehensive bibliography, extensive end-notes, and a thorough index. It is no surprise that this important work received support from the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site Partnership Board.

It is liberally graced with gorgeous full-colour photographs, diagrams, and maps. Most excitingly for us, it includes a beautifully reproduced illustration of our very own mine Captain, John Rule junior. Seeing our family history preserved in such a high-caliber publication is incredibly moving.

This book is far more than a family artifact; it is a sweeping celebration of Cornish mining ingenuity at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and a testament to the profound historical ties between Cornwall and Mexico.

What a privilege to have proofread ‘The Great Trek’. Sharron’s passion for Cornish mining heritage shines through on every page, bringing the past to life in a way that no history lesson ever could for me. This book is a wonderful example of determination, resilience, great strength and true grit.
